Cole began his career as a youth player for Arsenal on leaving school in 1988, signing professional in 1989.

He made his only league appearance for Arsenal, aged 19, as a substitute against Sheffield United at Highbury during a First Division match on 29 December 1990.

In 1993, Andy Cole sign for Newcastle, the then Division one leaders in a record £1.75 million deal. He netted 12 goals that season to help Newcastle earn a place in the Premier League.

In June 2014, Cole suffered kidney failure after developing focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. In April 2017, he underwent a kidney transplant. His nephew Alexander was the donor.
