Song competed against 77 other candidates in April 2018 for a position on the Cameroon national team. He temporarily filled the position later that year. 

Song was named coach of Cameroon’s Under-23 national football team on October 17, 2018, with the intention of leading them to success in the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations.

It was announced on February 28, 2022, that Song would succeed Toni Conceiço as manager of the Cameroon national team at the senior level.
